Principal's Letter

Hello Early College High School Family,

We are very excited about what the 2019-20 school year has in store for our students as ECHS heads into its 14th year. Once again, over 40% of our students earned a GPA of 3.5 or higher this past semester qualifying them to be on the Principal's Honor Roll! Our school was the only school in our school district to be recognized as a 2019 California Distinguished School this past spring (last time ECHS earned this award was in 2009). Our school was also the only high school in our school district to be recognized as a State of California Honor Roll High School and a U.S. News and World Report National High School this past spring for a fourth straight year.

This past school year, we were able to add an after school Coastline College Theater Arts course which enriched our performing arts profile of classes as Dance and Guitar have been added offerings in the past 4 years. All three courses will be available to students as after school on-campus offerings in 2019-20 as well. We also added Art 2 and MESA (Math, Engineering and Science Achievement) as course offerings for our students as additional electives this past year. Heading into 2019-20, we will be adding an Exploring Computer Science course for students to be given opportunities to build the necessary technical and collaborative skills that our 21st century job markets demand.

Lastly, ECHS is increasing the number of students who are accessing the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) elective class on our campus. Nearly two-thirds of our student body will be AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) students which will enable them to be better prepared for a 4-year college/university upon graduation. In 2018, ECHS just became designated an AVID Emerging Schoolwide high school for the very first time in the school's history!

I encourage our parents and families to be partners with us in the various ways you can help support our school. Your involvement is critical in enhancing your child's educational experience while in high school. Please consider taking part in our PTSA and our School Site Council. These are two excellent opportunities for you to be a direct contributor to our school's efforts in moving forward.

The 2019-20 school year promises to be a great experience for our students and we look forward to you being a part of the experience as a partner with our school!

Sincerely,
David M. Martinez, Ed.D.
